Holistic Wellness for Children and Family

Individual and Family Therapy

Dr. Lara specializes in providing early childhood therapy to young children and their families. She may work with the parents and child together or provide only parent coaching and support. Most families find a combination of these options works best. Dr. Lara’s approach is attachment-oriented, focusing on supporting the parent-child relationship as the agent of change. Using her highly reflective approach, she gently guides parents in deepening their understanding of their child’s challenges and needs so they intuitively understand how to meet their child’s needs in the moment. Parents find the experience transformative, resulting in improved relationships and greater ease for everyone in the family. In addition to strengthening family attachments, Dr. Lara incorporates somatic strategies, cognitive and behavioral strategies, and narrative approaches. This is all done in the context of play - most of Dr. Lara’s early childhood therapy clients love coming to her office because it means they get to PLAY!

Dr. Lara has expertise in treating early childhood mental health challenges including defiance and acting out, early childhood trauma, separation anxiety, nightmares and sleep difficulties, autism-spectrum disorders, social challenges, and childhood anxiety. She is certified in a number of evidence-based practices, including Safe and Sound Protocol, Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Managing and Adapting Practices.

Dr. Lara works with private pay clients and is able to provide superbills for insurance reimbursement. In addition to in-office and Telehealth appointments, she may have availability to provide in-home therapy for convenience and comfort for families with infants and young children.

Speaking Engagements
 and Workshops

Dr. Lara is a skilled and engaging professional speaker and workshop facilitator. She is available for one-time events or ongoing workshop series. Dr. Lara provides workshops on subjects including gentle parenting, healthy sleep development, raising resilient children, healthy and effective discipline, breaking intergenerational patterns, burnout prevention, and shame-free parenting.

Neuropsychological Assessment

Dr. Lara is an expert in the neuropsychological assessment of complex psychological and neurodevelopmental issues from infancy through young adulthood, including assessment for ADHD, autism, developmental disorders and delays, learning disorders, socioemotional challenges, trauma-related conditions, and relationship issues. She has special expertise in early childhood assessment and neurodevelopmental assessment. She uses a comprehensive, interdisciplinary lens to identify contributing factors in order to provide families with a plan of action that aligns with their family values. For instance, did you know that many common medical issues can cause psychological symptoms that mimic psychological disorders like ADHD? Rather than simply identify the psychological symptoms and provide a psychological diagnosis without ever investigating the possible underlying issues, Dr. Lara is very skilled at teasing apart a complex presentation to get to the root cause of what’s going on for your child.

Additionally, Dr. Lara recognizes that different families have different values and levels of comfort with various treatment approaches. For families who are looking for a mainstream treatment approach, Dr. Lara can recommend you to local educational therapists and child psychiatrists. For families who are looking for a more holistic or alternative approach, Dr. Lara can connect you to providers such as neurofeedback providers, naturopaths, occupational therapists, holistic dentists, functional medicine pediatricians, or nutritionists.

Finally, Dr. Lara is well-known for her warm and approachable personality. Your child is going to enjoy their assessment sessions and Dr. Lara will make sure you feel supported as you undertake this intensive process. If a difficult diagnosis is uncovered, she will provide emotional support every step of the way. Dr. Lara has trained many providers on her unique approach to supporting families through the assessment process.
